What is Legacy Giving?
A legacy gift is a distribution from your estate to a charitable organization through your will, trust or financial accounts. You can designate a specific amount, a percentage or the residual of your estate to the Chronicle Season of Sharing Fund.
Your legacy gift provides future support to the Chronicle Season of Sharing Fund when you remember us through your will or trust or name us as the beneficiary on your savings, checking or pension account. All these gifts represent a meaningful way for you to create a philanthropic legacy to help prevent homelessness and hunger throughout the Bay Area.
There is no minimum gift amount required and you can adjust it at any time. Your gift also entitles your estate to an unlimited federal estate tax charitable deduction.
What kind of gifts are included in legacy giving?
A bequest is a promise of a gift of assets that you commit to now, but will not be available for Chronicle Season of Sharing Fund to use until some future time. For example, you can specify in your will or living trust that a certain amount of your estate will be left to the Chronicle Season of Sharing Fund. You can also donate land or property to be transferred through your will or trust.
A beneficiary designation means that you name Chronicle Season of Sharing Fund as a recipient of funds from one or more of your accounts. These can include checking accounts, savings accounts, certificates of deposits, life insurance policies, and brokerage accounts.
